The Train Job

Purpose

To have a framing story that takes place as a train robbery, interspersed with quick RP scenes that show how the characters meet.

Intro

In Medius Res

The sun is flying high in across a vast expanse of dessert, a sophisticated train roars by. There is a dusty town, looking mostly abandoned coming from inside we hear the sound of a wild Rebel Yell, "I told you we shouldn't have pissed off those bikers," The party is in a biker bar, Grizzly men surround you, one breaks a bottle on the counter. "Also, I think we're late to catch our train."

Assignment for Pie, to end the scene with a reference to Grace's bad luck (probably in reference to the tunnel."

My Name is Grace Lu'clas and two years ago my world was shattered, but in so many ways that’s when my life began. In the company of horrors I learned about friendship and loyalty, sacrifice and courage. Humanity isn't a species, it’s a state of mind, it can’t be defeated, it moves mountains, it saves souls. We were blessed as much as we were cursed. In this little enclave of the lost, I witnessed the very best of humanity. We were safe here, while outside the monsters prowled.

It really all changed when I met him. We met in a dingy bar, smoke from artificial courgettes and their glowing blue led lights doing more to light the place then the dim lights. Of course that's why these places existed, to feel the press of other bodies in a sea of anonymity. I wasn't looking for trouble, of course I never am, seems to find me anyways, and by god was the man trouble. I knew it as soon as he offered to buy me a drink.

Vampire Fight: Female Vamp trying to compete to pick up Pie. He tried to pick up Grace and when she isn't receptive the vamp chick swoops in and tries to pick him up. Grace will have to rescue him before he becomes a snack.

Grace needs to end with "Don't worry cowboy I'll just put it on your tab".

Free fall, down from a floating satellite, through the atmosphere, onto a recognizable continent, down to the south west of of the united states, A speck of light, which grows into a massive city, the single point of light, becoming many, buildings covered in lights and phosphorescent domes. Down to a white marble columned building. Inside there is a sound of laughter, a large hall like living room, a fire roars in an antique fireplace, Old furniture, but clean decorates the room. On a couch a man lounges his feet up on a coffee table, a woman blond, dressed in a white leather jacket and blue jeans, stands in front the of the fire gesticulating wildly. Another woman, an Asian beauty and strangely angular features leans against an end table, while another man, hidden in shadows cast by the fire, taps at a holographic screen, alert and listening to the blonde.

The Job

  • To retrieve a crate of stolen bio-weapons.

  • Zeta Pharmaceuticals a division of Aquarius has recently been robbed by a the Arizona Border Patrol, the items in question are a series of highly classified artificial organisms which have been incredibly useful in limb regeneration but also have unspecified weapon potential.
    • DM Note:They have found something that they shouldn't have. Note the loot is five alien eggs, which will be sending off ooky signals and will be sending out disruptions in the Equation. The company actually wants the eggs for scientific research and has no plans to destroy them, but they really really ought to.
    • The reward for this is 4 million dollars.

The Train

It can not be stopped from moving, because the Arizonians have rigged it with a bomb.

Train Job elements

  • Method A is simply to put something big on the tracks, in hopes the driver will simply become so confused he’ll stop and sit there, perhaps wondering how that large, freshly-cut log got there, or cursing the obscure illness that struck that moose dead right across the tracks. At this point, the robbers pop out of the woods, flourish a weapon, and either take the loot or, for the more discriminating robber, proceed to Method D’s advanced steps. This method, however, is easily thwarted by train drivers who simply back up instead of sitting still. A variation of this method was used in the Great Train Robbery as late as 1963. I guess those Brits don’t watch a lot of Westerns.
  • Method B is simply to put something on the tracks that will derail the train, thereafter following procedures as outlined in Method A, only maybe sometimes horizontally. This has the following disadvantages: it is hella noisy, drawing unwanted attention even on the most desolate of mountainsides; it kills a lot of people, and this is always a disadvantage when you factor potential jail sentences vs potential lynchings into the ROI; and the entire thing may catch fire, preventing you from making off with the gold and rendering the entire episode needlessly gruesome and unprofitable.
  • Method C, favored by film directors who’ve never left Los Angeles County, is to gallop up alongside the train and climb aboard, flourish your weapon in the engineer’s startled face, and take the loot, although not before stealing the heart of a winsome blonde passenger.
  • Method D, and this is the method favored by the Grey Fox himself, is to wait till the train makes an scheduled stop at a mail depot or some other unpopulated spot, sneak aboard, climb over the tender (which carries the wood or coal for the engine) flourish your weapon in the engineer’s face, and proceed to the advanced steps.

Macguffin 1

Need the access codes to the safe, the Arizonians are hyper vigilant to computer terrorism and security threats, so while the locks are digital, they aren't hooked up to any wifi and the access codes are held on a single USB stick in a brief case cuffed to a CEO surrounded by a cadre of BORTAC "Border Patrol Tactical Unit". The CEO is staying in the penthouse of the Mandalay Bay.

Need to get the brief case with out the camera recognizing us, and the security guards alerting to us.

Patrick's character will be the one to go after the guy with her slut skills.

Scene ends with Grace asking, "Think you got this wrapped?"

Vignette 2

A large white building, with marbled columns, the Las Vegas History Museum,, Valentines Day, a grand gala is in full swing. A large Banner on the front proclaims : "The Mysteries of the Desert Dynasty: Princess Ankehnaten of the Middle Kingdom, Featuring the amulet of Immortal Love."

Patrick is stealing an Ankh necklace from a downtown museum, as you wait to turn a corner to avoid a guard. You slip into a blind corner where you know there are no cameras, she places the necklace around your neck then peels off your catsuit to reveal a sexy little silk dress, she shakes out the wrinkles, unfolds an expensive nano-fabric purse, from the purse she removes a mask. She heads down the main lobby, where people in fine clothes are talking about fine things, none of them notice her but to smile and nod. She bumps into a man.

It's Damon, you are working security for the museum, not glamorous but it pays pretty well and you heard rumors his place is up to be hit by a robbery. You notice the woman who bumped you, she has what first you thought was a fake necklace of the Immortal Love, a lot of women here do, but you hear a female voice in your head, "that's real," she says.

Neither one of you notice that someone else is also following her.

Damon catches up and confronts her. The fight is cut short as the Mummy approaches them.

She probably leaps at the chance to run away with this poor smitten rich dope, but he sees her wearing the ankh as a symbol that she will be the vessel for his beloved's reincarnation.

Ken will try to stop her from going with her, so he will have to show his power, perhaps by conjuring 8 foot tall jackal demons from the scattered sands of the desert.

She will realize he's not a simple dope, but by then he will not be interested in her saying no.

Chase scene! Let's do some stairwells, elevator shafts, some sort of loft or whatever, and ultimately outside...many stories up, on a ledge, amidst gargoyles or somesuch. (Make sure he can't fly or any such nonsense)

We corner her. I say something like "hey, just give up the necklace, and we'll go easy on ya". At which point the patron reveals "Whilst I am the owner of that exquisite piece, I have no contract with you sorcerer." but you my dear, only my beloved could touch the necklace without being destroyed. I will permit no man to touch you."

Running away with the hunter is better than being captured and "reincarnated" by whoever the hell this guy is.

We join forces against the patron and his men with guns. It's a fight. Ultimately, he's too powerful for us was going easy at first, don't come off too strong in round 1), and we flee...specifically, I grab her, we jump to our doom...but not, because I can slow-fall like a sumbitch.

If he's imperiled by the fight, he'll simply dissolve frustrated into a dust devil and menacingly blow away while promising her that "You will yet be mine, Ankehnaten. You will remember!"

Alex and Grace

Alex is on a roof, he has been waiting for this moment for weeks, he has finally managed to find the Yith, it has been making outliers in the great equation for nearly a month now. He looks through his binoculars, he scans, he has calculated it perfectly, even accounting for the variable of the Yith itself. The yellow pinto will run the red light, causing the little old lady to narrowly be avoid being hit by it, which will cause her to bump into the business man with the coffee, the coffee will spill on his suit, he'll stop at the street vendors to grab a napkin, the vendor will get pissed and their argument will delay the little girl on the bicycle long enough in front of the alley that he'll be able to shoot her with his high powered rifle, knocking the little bitch into his containment circle. "Target acquired" he says as he waits and then something truly horrible happens. Instead of the old lady nearly getting creamed and bumping the business man and spilling his coffee a woman steps out of a sandwich shop and stops the little old lady and they chat briefly, she continues down the street, the business man smiles at her and doesn't spill his coffee, and as she passes the street vendor she blocks the line of sight. The little girl passes by his trap before he can stop. "What the hell was that," he exclaims allowed, he's got to figure out what that is, not to mention stop the Yith.

He hurries to follow, as he does he bumps into Grace, who sees his gun. She then notices the target he is chasing, and begins to chase after him. He manages to corner the Yith in another alley, he's hoping to catch it in his weaker but portable containment field. Grace catches up tries to grapple him, and they fight. The Yith takes this opportunity to show it's true form, which Grace doesn't see until it's almost to late.

Assignment He subdues it and she asks "so...what are you going to do with it?"

  • A Yith is also called The Great Race are beings of enormous intellectual and psychic powers that once dwelt on the dying world of Yith. They escaped the destruction of their home planet by transferring their minds to the bodies of a species native to the Earth in the far distant past.

Place: Alex's lab

Jump cut to the full reveal of Alex's lab. A lab, Atraight out of a B-horror movie, a forgotten pin-up calendar of a cowgirl from 1947, for all it's age it looks very clean, and there are giant holographic computer monitors blinking at and running vast amounts of calculation. Various creatures hand suspended in glass tubes, some still alive and wriggling. The whole thing hums with an misbegotten eeriness.

We walk in as he narrates the features of the lab he explains his lab. The Yith is contained in one of the cylinders. The party is here.

"So...the stupid codes for the safe are encoded, did you figure it out?" Asks Grace.

A woman, a hologram, named Deva, appears behind her, "Yes, we have, although we still have not accounted for the fluctuation in the Equation, and then of course there's you, for which we have countered as much as possible but these outliers are not connected to you" she says narrowing her eyes.

"Alex, tell your fembot to stop being mean to me."

Time to complete final plans.

Song: Muse Showbiz instrumental

Climax

Resume where the intro left off. The plan just failed. The train blew past our road block that we didn't have time to set up. Or whatever. Time to improvise. My character will take the lead, if need be ("say, that's a nice bike!").

Motorcycle chase! Here's how it can go:

  • Start us off split on two sides; two bikes on one side with a head start (me and Patrick?), and Grace's truck with Alex in it
  • Each round, there are hazards, perhaps randomly generated, perhaps planned. We have to avoid them (skills, choices; remember, on a vehicle we use normal skills like Agility and Dodge, and the vehicle modifies it based on how agile it is).
  • We also have to push to catch up with the train. It will take something like 3 successes; failed checks on the hazards won't kill us (except on critical failures, requiring hero points and the like), but will set us back.
  • If we're progressing too fast, through a tunnel at us...it's either guaranteed to set us back a bit, or guaranteed to kill a really stupid PC. And even if one is stupid, we kind of all have to get there (except grace, maybe? someone needs to drive the getaway car)
  • While all this is happening, it might be interesting if someone is shooting at us. Let's just gloss over the whole "the guard would tell the other guards" thing. I have a jammer. I guess. Who knows. It's more fun this way.
    • Maybe there just aren't all that many guards.
  • We have to get to a target near the middle of the train.
  • Once there, we'll have to leap from our bikes (or the bed of the truck) to get to the train.
  • I have to be there for my hacking skills. Patrick has to be there for who the fuck knows. Gino is needed cuz of magic. Or something. Basically we all have to be there except Grace.

Once we're on, we'll be splitting up--one to the front, one to the back, one to make a distraction in the middle, perhaps. Each of us will face several skill/combat/RP challenges, depending on our strengths and weaknesses. Being a buffoon, I'll probably come in handy making a distraction. Who knows.

When we finally get the thingy, we get word that we have 60 seconds to escape before the train passes some sort of point of no return. We have to rush back through all the carefully-navigated traps and encounters we just went through.

We escape just in time, jumping into the truck and riding off into the sunset. Yay!

Second Climax

We get to the meeting place with the client. But then, there's a twist! Dun dun dun!!!

Depending on what the party decides to do when they discover that the item is actually Cthulhu Alien eggs, they will find that they have hatched, so far the eggs haven't infected the passengers on the train, but they might if they get cornered in the passenger section.

Description

You manage to make it onto the caboose of the train, breathless you take a minute to look around. Something doesn't seem right. The train echoes and rocks softly along the track. Walking through the caboose you stumble upon a corpse, a NCBP (Nevada Customs and Border Patrol) agent. His corpse is badly burned and covered with large gashes. (Allow Alex to make checks on doctoring to find out more details, acid, size of weapon, natural or unnatural etc).
